So you were born about 2000+ years too late to have been one of the 300 heroic Spartan warriors that fought at Thermopylae? Not to worry because here’s your chance to be one of 300 modest heroes that helps to support a great cause, that being the Great Allegheny Passage.
On July 17-18, 2010 Venture Outdoors is sponsoring the Venture Outdoors 2010 Relay Ride to raise funds to maintain and improve the trail. As in the past two years the event will start in Georgetown with the cyclist covering the entire 184 miles of the C&O Trail in approximately 12 hours before arriving at Cumberland, MD by evening. From there other team members will “carry the flag” riding through the night the 150 miles from Cumberland, MD over the Great Allegheny Passage into Pittsburgh the following morning.
As a team member who will be riding from Cumberland to Pittsburgh (how come I’m doing this riding at night thing again for the 3rd. time ??? ) I’ve committed to raising a minimum of $550 in donations.
And I need your help.
A number of generous donors, including First Commonwealth Bank, have already “stepped up to the plate” and made donations of just short of $250. I need $300 to reach the goal. A friend suggested it would be super-cool if 300 people each donated just $1. That would be really cool.
Will you help and be one of the 300?
I can’t put all your names on the t-shirt but I can list them here if you like.
Here’s How to Help
No amount is to small. Grab change off the dresser, stuff two bucks in an envelope, send a check or click the PayPal link. Whatever works for you will be most appreciated. Let me clarify that I’m committed to paying the $550 and if donations fall short of that amount I make up the difference.
I’m making the commitment because I have more than enough faith that donors will come through to sponsor my participation. Even just a little helps a lot so please lend a hand and make a donation whether large or small. Even $1.00 by PayPal is very cool.
- If you have questions or to contact me privately email Mike
- To send a sponsorship donation via US mail:
Mike Shafer
2148 Ardmore Blvd.
Suite 2
Pittsburgh, PA 15221
While I don’t recommend sending cash via the US mail it’s your call of course. If you would rather send a check please make it payable to “Venture Outdoors”.
- Donate by PayPal:
Given the time limitations I haven’t been able to set up a separate PayPal account so I am using my business one temporarily. Any donations made will be listed on the donation form provided by Venture Outdoors and I will then make a check for the total to give to V.O.
To donate using PayPal:
1. Click the “Donation” button below to be taken to PayPal
2. Enter the amount you wish to donate and click the “Update Total” button.
3. Log into your PayPal account.
One last thing. If you donate (or even if not) please leave a comment encouraging others. This about a community sharing something fun together.
Thanks Again!

Thanks go out to the anonymous donor who contributed $5.00 towards the Venture Outdoors 2010 Relay fund raiser. I was peddling out Rt 30 east headed for “Little” Boston last Friday (6/18) when we had a brief chat about what I was doing and without much ado threw me a “fiver.” Maybe it was the overloaded BOB Trailer that made him feel pity!
Thanks go out to my friend Fritz for his generous donation.
Most appreciated!
My sincere thanks and appreciation go out to First Commonwealth Bank (and the great folks at the Forest Hills office in particular) for the generous contribution.
Thank you Steve M. for your generous donation. Venture Outdoors, myself and all the many thousands of folks who use the Great Allegheny Passage each year salute you and say “Thanks!”
A thank you goes out to Eric H. for his contribution. Most appreciated
A gracious thank you goes out to my friend and client architect Jimmy Goldman for his generous contribution to the cause!
As is her style my friend (and client) Karen (owner of ArtistaGraphics) comes through with a generous offer to print a custom t-shirt for the event.
I would note we are going to give recognition to the first five donors over $150 by including their names and logo on the back graphic. First Commonwealth Bank has already grabbed the first line with their donation but there’s plenty of space folks and the shirt quality is top of the line professional work (Karen has been doing this for, well longer than she likes to admit!) and the proof is in her store front display at 2148 Ardmore Blvd in Forest Hills (next door to First Commonwealth Bank).
We’re going to print one color, maybe two if we get carried away with creativity (a likely occurrence) on a top quality safety-green T. Perfect for riding and showing your support for the Great Allegheny Passage, Venture Outdoors and the great businesses in the area that support Pittsburgh’s present and future.
It “Relay Day 2010!” The Georgetown teams are already riding and we folks starting at Cumberland are getting ready to leave for there in a bit.
Thanks again to all the wonderful folks who have donated to support my participation in this event which raises much needed funds to help support the Great Allegheny Passage hiking/biking trail.
